Bruton Writing Workshops
Always felt you had a book inside you?
If you’re on this page because you’re interested in booking yourself into a weekly workshop at my house in Shepton Montague (near Bruton, Somerset), here’s the low-down. I currently run two weekly workshops: a general one (suitable for all) on Thursday mornings, 9.30-1pm – currently full but you’re welcome to get in touch and put yourself on the waiting list; and one on Friday mornings, 9.30-1pm, which is for those with a work in progress (again, currently full, but do register your interest for when places open up).
The workshops are lively and engaging and a lot of fun – expect to write, read out and learn about new aspects of the writing craft. One week we might look at how to write a really attention-grabbing first paragraph. Another week we’ll examine the pros and cons of a first- or third-person point-of-view (one of my favourites). Or we might explore why perhaps it’s not so important what your characters say as how they’re sitting (or leaping around, or propping themselves up against the mantlepiece) when they’re saying it…
You’ll be triggered to write short fragments during the workshops – pieces that you can go off and edit/expand at home (entirely optional – some people only write during the workshops and still produce whole novels!). Expect to be surprised and delighted by what you produce: something magical happens when 10 people bow their heads quietly together in a room…
What I can guarantee is that while you may write very well already, in these workshops your writing will move to a whole new level. And your novel/memoir/don’t-yet-know-what-to-call-it-but-I’m-interested-to-see-where-it’s-going will, almost without you noticing, start to take shape.
A series of 10 workshops costs £400, payable up-front. If you can’t make a session, you can receive either a recording or an emailed workshop plan so that you can do the workshop in your own time. Groups are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and strictly limited to 1o participants.
